What is eLearning?

What is eLearning?

eLearning to me is, leveraging on (every) available technology in the e-world (Mobile, podcasts, wikis, blogs, CBT (Computer Based Training), WBT (Web Based Training), Webcasts, Webinars… the list is quite huge) to take Training (a.k.a) Learning to the intended audience.
The common trend though is CBT and WBT. There are various schools of thought on how eLearning must be used to handle training. Some prefer just eLearning while some would go for Blended Learning – a mix of both eLearning and ILT (Instructor Lead Training).

eLearning helps a learner to learn at his/her pace – self paced learning. This technology to a greater extent helps the trainer and the trained. The major scoring factors, being the effectiveness of the training since the learner goes through the training sessions at his/her will, there is no force fitted ‘push’ learning happening here. Travel time cutting (at times across geographical boundaries) is another advantage since the training is dependent on e-technologies. Tracking the progress of a learner is easy when done through a Learning Management System (LMS) and eLearning goes hand in hand with LMS. Last but not the least cost savings are huge for both the trainer and the trained. On the downside some feel that the human touch (face to face interaction) is lost during e-training, but some e-trends like webinars and video conferencing could make up for this.

The present generation of humans (computer, video games, iPod and mobile era) to a greater percentage are more gadget savvy, thus when given with an e-training module which helps them learn anytime, anywhere they are generally comfortable with it. Corporates, Governments and Universities are going the eLearning way.

eLearning is the way to go for future learning needs.

Cheers
H
